Is this a healthy, reasonable/realistic diet?

Breakfast- Rice bubbles, fruit salad in juice and low fat milk.
Morning tea- an apple.
Lunch- Sandwich x1- grain bread, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, carrot and ham or turkey.
Afternoon tea- smoothie x1. Low fat milk, fresh berries, tinned tropical fruit salad in juice.
Dinner- Baked salmon or cod/chicken/lean beef. Steamed veges. Pasta/rice.
Dessert- Low fat yogurt.

I drink more than 8 glasses of water a day.

I’m hoping to lose about 5-10kgs/11-22lb.
I’ll be walking 30-45 minutes daily.

At the moment I’m 175cm/5′9 and 70kgs/155lb.
I would like to get down to 60kgs/133lb.

Is this realistic?
How many calories in this diet?
Thanks.
No mayo, butter or margarine

Hi, Yes, I would say that’s a reasonable diet, depending of course on portion sizes. You seem to be keeping your major food groups in mind in your selections. Two key elements to lasting weight loss are healthy foods and proper portions. If you have 3 small, healthy meals a day and 2 small, healthy snacks, you will lose weight. Each meal should be around 400 calories and each snack should be about 100-150 calories. Your body can’t process much more than that at a time and leftovers of course get stored as fat. Eating highly nutritious foods is the key, so think in terms of lean protein, veggies, whole-grains, fruits, low-fat dairy, and heart-healthy oils (olive, canola, avocado).

Your walk will be imperative–make sure you walk at an intensity that leaves you huffing and puffing for maximum fat burn.

You can find a calorie counter on this page. There are also lots of helpful weight loss tips on the same site. Good luck!

Diet is fine, but you really don’t need to lose that much weight for your height. I’m 5′7" and 140lbs. and I look really thin because I not only walk, but I do weight training, too. And, within reason, I can eat pretty much whatever I want. Sounds like you really just need to work out more than strict dieting. And watch out for those smoothies. They can really add a lot of calories and fat. I would stick to fresh fruit for tea and go for fresh fruit for dessert after dinner.

    for a workable diet
here is what my dietician suggests . follow a practical diet. start your meal with a soup or a huge salad. this fills u up. Make sure your plate has this ratio – 50 per cent veg, 25 per cent carb.remember potatoes, corn and peas come in carbs category, 25 per cent protein.this will prevent cravings too.have a protein shake if you like too.an occassional treat is OK. have a snack every three hours. fruit ideally berries, or soy nuts. just 2 tbsp of soya subsides hunger pangs. switch from white rice and bread to brown. eat 900gms of veggies a day.Lose a kilo a week. that is permanent loss. pick an exercise regime you like.
get a pedometer and try to take 10,000 steps everyday.

yeah. it sounds like you included all the proper foods. try and eat 5-6 smaller meals a day or 2-3 meals and 2-3 snack. it will have time to digest so you wont gain weight. you are kinda tall so you weight isnt too off now. good luck! =D

It seems like a very reasonable, healthy, and well balanced diet to me. To calculate the calories, it would depend on the portion sizes, but assuming reasonable portions and minimal condiments (mayonnaise, margarine or butter all add about 100 calories per tablespoon), I believe this diet would enable you to lose weight while supplying the necessary nutrients.

Yep, that looks good, but I couldn’t tell you how many Kcal it contains. But you’re not overweight. When I was your age I ate a lot more than this diet. I had breakfast in an Otago hall of residence in 1990 and I thought it was one of the tastiest, healthiest and well-balanced meals I’d seen.

That sounds pretty good to me.

You can get low fat margarine and a lite mayonnaise, so you can get by if you want some.
